NC vendor ousted for political and religious products

We shop here when we visit family in the Charlotte area nearly every summer...

Curtsy to
Right from the Right:

CHARLOTTE, NC

While protesters rallied in his support, the owner of a Concord Mills kiosk that sells conservative merchandise said he met with the mall's manager Sunday to see what arrangements can be made for him to remain after his lease expires Friday.

...

Spivack has contended that he's being kicked out of the mall for political reasons. He's traced his exile to a letter to the editor in the Charlotte Observer criticizing his business, saying it promotes “ideas such as racism, sexism and even slavery.”

...

He opened his Free Market Warrior kiosk last spring, selling such items as “Impeach Obama” bumper stickers and baby bibs that say, “My parents chose life. Thanks Mom and Dad!”

Where does it say he's been "ousted"? His lease expires on Friday (7/31), and it sounds like it might not get reviewed, perhaps because of complaints over what he sells. The landlord has discretion over whether to renew the lease; there is no law that requires they renew the lease or allow this guy to sell his wares at this mall.

Further, where does it mention anything about religious items? It all seems political (unless you presume that any stance against abortion is necessarily a religious one, which isn't necessarily the case)

Same old inflammatory and ill-informed commentary from this blog.

that should say "might not get renewed" , not "reviewed".

Anon #1 - Do you post here because you like to hear youself speak (so to speak)?

No, I post meaningful retorts to Ginny's rhetoric, questing her interpretation of events, pointing out logical flaws, all in an effort to engage and educate.

How 'bout yourself? Do you merely badger other commenters with pointless questions?

Yes, I do badger those who need it. Sort of like scolding your children for poor behavior. I also, like to keep the lefties, like yourself and the landlord in this article in check.

The landlord does have every right to oust the business man, just like the supporters have every right to protest the landlord.

Have you looked into this? The guy was selling a bunch of pro-secession, pro-Confederacy stuff.

Which is fine, and he is free to do it and shouldn't be arrested, but I can see why a landlord might want to tamp down on the 'South will rise again' stuff, since it frankly frightens many people away. It might be harder for a Wisconsinite to understand, but that stuff is kind of code for 'black folk not wanted here' in these parts.

Most communities are far more offended by statements advocating slavery and treason than they are about sex education books for kids. Call us crazy.

I also wonder if these same people are agast at killing unborn babies?

Ummm...yeah, I am pretty sure that many pro-lifers also don't like the idea of slavery or seceding from the United States. I'm not sure what the point of your question is.

Ginny tries to jump on too many bandwagons before she researches them.

This is an excellent example of that.

Well, this and the Singer a couple of blogs up that she brags about who ended up posing in a dirty mag.

Guess the comment before this one proves Ginny isn't a prude, eh?

This issue should have never been brought up here. It's as simple as this, the landlord recieved complaints to people who find material such as this offensive, the lease was expiring, and the landlord doesn't want to have more complaints sent against him. This isn't some grand political issue, although I suppose it is the nature of Ginny to take a small issue that shouldn't have a giant political connotation and make it as public as she possibly can.

I didn't read anywhere in the article that the landlord received complaints. However, I do know from the story that 100+ people protested in favor of the store.

This leads me to believe that the landlord ousted the business because it did not agree with polictical message.

Are you saying that would be outside his write? Let me ask you this, if you owned a mall and had a bookstore there that sold only sexually explicit books, what would you do? Based of off what we've already seen in West Bend, Ginny would get rid of the vender. That's what this guy did. I have nothing against him displaying his political message. I just feel that his right to free speech shouldn't supercede the rights of the landlord.

Correction, right rather than write. sorry
