XXX-rated library? The West Bend Library is an "UNSAFE ZONE" for CHILDREN

!!! Warning: This blog post is not suitable for children. Contains sexually-explicit language only available to kids at the West Bend Library.

The West Bend Community Memorial Library and members of the SHARE Library System (to include Germantown, Slinger, Hartford and Kewaskum) no longer can be considered SAFE FOR CHILDREN.

Your library board believes:

1. All materials should be available for all ages (anything goes). Really!
2. National control cannot (and should not) be resisted; therefore, the disturbing value system of the ALA, OIF, WLA trumps local control of the library by the citizens and taxpayers it serves.
3. Young adults are children ages 11 through 17. (Be sure to address your 11 year old in a manner appropos.)
4. Assisting parents in identifying sexually explicit materials within your library is not important to them.
5. You must stay with your children and read each book he/she checks out to assure they are not entering into the YA Zone, that is, the "Yes to All Zone."
6. ..that if other people's young children (even younger than 11....) are openly reading books of a sexually explicit, graphic nature, say nothing...and by all means, don't stop them from checking them out. You, too, can have an 8-year-old snag "The Joy of Sex" off the shelf right here in your very own library!
7. ..that porn filters are not required, therefore, none are needed. True loyalty to the many children they serve. After all, we would not want to restrict freedom of speech to those young'uns!
8. ...that organizations such as SafeLibraries, PFOX, PABBIS, and Family Friendly Libraries, that work to protect children from being sexually victimized are not welcome in our community.
9. That the following excerpts are perfectly acceptable for the eyes of children:

a. "I try to look into my boyfriend's eyes with I'm sucking. It seems to get him off faster. I also lick and suck his balls, but not too hard. If my mouth gets tired I use my hand to jerk him off for a little while until I can suck again. Don't suck too hard - I try to make my mouth feel soft but tight." - Deal With It
and
b. "She giggled as he raised her up, lifting her under the arms and setting her on the desk, facing him. She pulled back her skirt..." "....as he raised her legs onto his shoulders and plunged his face between her legs. He moaned and his shoulders jerked violently as he burrowed between her thighs." - Fade
and
c. "After a few minutes, the boy pushed the girl's head down, and she started to kiss his penis." "Finally, she stopped crying because he put his penis in her mouth, and I don't think you can cry in that position." - The Perks of Being a Wallflower
and
d. "....I loomed in push-up position over Dub's naked body." "I began doubting she had an orifice down there." "After trading positions, Dub began grinding into me, attempting to thrust in a matching rhythm, but it seemed like very time she zigged, I zagged. Twice I fell out and had to be reinserted." "After the second time, I convinced Dub that we should try this the old-fashioned way. Back on top, I became the master of my destiny. After years of self-service, I recognized the signs of impending orgasm - the tingle, the shortening of breath, my testicles' desure to join my lungs." - Rats Saw God
and
e. "Three-way sex ..." "..and orgy or group sex refers to sex with more than three participants. When multiple people are involved in sexual activities, it can stop being about an emotional connection and become more of a physical interaction." - Deal With It
and
f. "Some people are turned on by the idea of sex as a power relationship. Tying each other up (bondage) is one way to do that. Sadomasochism (S&M), in which one partner deliberately inflicts pain on the other, is also a kind of power role-playing. These games can be fun to experiment with..." - Deal With It

(These, fortunately, are the kinder, gentler excerpts.)

This is a propagana battle to ensure children retain access to inappropriate mateial despite the law, common sense and community standards.

YOUR LIBRARY BOARD has chosen to reject your requests to accommodate YOUR COMMUNITY STANDARDS.

You have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

I support everyone's right to voice their own opinions, but it seems like you are getting dangerously close to libel.

Isn't Terry Vrana getting sued by the library for saying similar things?

Boy do I love, love, love taking things out of context! Nicely done.

Marshwood,
Even I can draw a line. The language? Sure you have free speech and I support that but you are not writing a book. You are attacking Ginny.
I don't agree with Ginny on the library issue or this blog post but seriously cussing her out? WOW.

Ridiculous statements here! Would any sane parent leave a kid alone at a mall? Movie theater? Libraries are not intended to be "safe" or "family friendly." They are designed to be places to find all kinds of information, literature, other media, and so on. And no, none of this is XXX. Above all, don't try to keep stuff from other people's kids. And lastly, your values do NOT represent the values of the whole community so stop implying that they do.

For someone to comment using vulgar language, to me, lacks the ability to stand up for themselves and can only criticize behind a computer screen. I'm sure if you felt your rights or family values were being taken for granted, you would only send an e-mail with vulgar language!!

It isn't all "traditional family values" that Ginny is advocating for. It's the simple fact that what is made available in a public library that she is challenging. If I remember correctly, all of us has the right and ability to fight for what we believe in. I appreciate the attention being brought to this issue and the issue being disected publicly.

People become so busy that sometimes we fail to see what our children are doing or reading. It's advocates like Ginny that help me and others become more aware of what is made available to our children. For that, I am thankful!!!

And I wrote this without cussing!!

Hugs Ginny.

Well said Tom. ginny think that if she tells herself and others often enough that she represents the community everyone will believe it. thank goodness the bloggers at Sleepless in West Bend call her on her BS and show that she does not represent the community. also, they call her on her selective memory. Too often she changes her story and then hopes others wil forget what she said before.

Ginny, let me ask you, how did you manage to create the children you so vehemently wish to protect? Was it that you closed your eyes and thought of Tommy Thompson? Or have you blotted those unpleasant nights it took to conceive however many offspring you have produced? Because apparently, in your world, sex is a baaaaaaaaaad -- if not the worst -- thing.

If I were to go overboard on an issue, I'd much rather have my kids shielded from the all-pervasive, right-wing beloved, ultra-violence present in all forms of media -- books, TV, the internet, etc. But I believe in free speech and that, with my general none-too-obtrusive guidance, my kids will ultimately do the right thing. And if they make a mistake now and then, well that's pretty much to be expected. They're people.

So, as much as I'm against graphic violence in books for pre-teens, I'm not calling for such books with to be banned from my library. If my son should happen to read a book with such graphically violent material, I'm confident he's got sense enough not to rush out and re-enact the scene for himself in vivid detail.

PPS. I'm glad to hear these other Wisconsin folks "speaking up." So, please let us all in on the joke -- Was that really your intent all along, getting sensible people riled up and cursing you on your blog? I thought so.

If you read Marshwood's post and eliminate seven letters starting with f, a Wisconsin-safe point is made. And even with the seven letters, it is not an attack on Ginny, but a criticism of her statements.

Thanks for commenting. We don't believe in book banning, either.

Tom is right. People shouldn't be allowed to control how everyone else raises their children.

Furthermore, why are so many of the entries on here homophobic? I keep seeing things like "heterosexual sex - pg64 ... homosexual sex - pg92." And a lot of bolded or colored text where it talks about any kind of homosexuality or intercourse of that nature. Do the parents of Wisconsin have something against homosexuals? Are you afraid that your children will become gay if they read this material? That's a sadly ignorant standpoint, and I truly feel sorry for you if you believe that.
