The race for superintendent in Menomonee Falls is down to three. Interviews are being conducted this week to replace long-time superintendent Keith Marty, who will be leaving for St. Louis at the end of the school year.

Charles Johns, principal at Rolling Meadows in Northern Illinois, will interview for the job this week, as will Pat Herdrich, the superintendent of West Bend schools. The superintendent of the Greenfield School District, Conrad Farner, will be the third candidate to vie for the spot in the Falls.

Parents Outraged Over SEX Survey for KIDS in West Bend

Referring to the recent SEX SURVEY for 11-18 year olds in the previous post, I've decided to share a few things I learned over the course of the past 24 hours.

I've received numerous calls, Facebook messages and emails from parents/friends who want to know what this is "all about." They have seen a few of the questions from the survey posted here and elsewhere and are outraged. Parents are feeling that a government-run school should not be digging into the sex lives (or lack thereof) of their kids. I agree. This has crossed the line of parental authority.

While the survey letter indicates a parent can opt out, why is this an automatic OPT IN? Why wasn't a return reply envelope included to encourage parents to send their opt OUT response back to the District?

The letter home should have indicated that a response was REQUIRED one way or the other, and included a return envelope.

WB East HS Principal Cassandra Schug has indicated that parents can COME IN to review the "updated" survey, but it has not been made available via the internet. Most certainly this survey can be scanned and posted quite easily.

This is unacceptable.

Call or email your school board members IMMEDIATELY and ask to have this PLACED ON THE AGENDA as an "action item" to be discussed as a board.

It has been updated for this year.

Parents received a letter this week informing them of the survey and advising them to fill out a form if they want to OPT OUT their child, and return the form to the school. No return envelope was provided. The date of the survey was not given. If a parent fails to return the form their child is automatically going to be a participant in this anonymous survey. The school district asks that all students take part in the survey.

I have a few questions myself.

1. If the district insists on asking such questions of our children, shouldn't the option be to OPT IN and not OPT OUT?
2. How many children will participate in this survey without parental knowledge?
3. Is this a good use of our tax dollars and class time?
4. What thoughts enter a child's mind when such questions are posed?
5. How can a parent decide if they want their child to participate when the survey was not included in the correspondence?

West Bend School District Compensation is HOW MUCH? New Ad tells all.

This advertisement ran in the West Bend Daily News today. All the more reason to vote for Bart Williams and Doug Rakowski in the upcoming school board race. Hold off on casting that third vote. It would simply be wasted on candidates that support this kind of nonsense. Not to mention that any other votes would be a vote for union-backed shenanigans.

Charter School endorsed by panel in WEST BEND

A GOOD thing.

The idea of establishing a charter school in the West Bend School District will come before the entire School Board next month, following the recommendation made Monday by Board of Instruction committee members to advance the concept. 

    Information about the proposed charter school, Crossroads Academy, was presented to school board members Tim Stepanski, Dave Weigand and Kris Beaver during the committee meeting Monday evening. 

    “I think ultimately we have to, in today’s budgets, at least look at other opportunities,” Stepanski said. “I would like to see it go forward to the board for further discussion.” 

    Bruce Dunford, West Bend resident and pastor of First Baptist Church, filed a petition to establish a charter school over the summer. 

    The purpose of starting a charter school, Dunford said, is to present the families of West Bend with a high quality, publicly funded alternative to the public school system. 

Citizen wants to know what gives with Fitness Center - asks CARLSON

Interesting.  Nice that St. Joe's wants to be the sugar daddy, but are they willing to pick up the tab for ongoing maintenance?  staff?  equipment replacement?  I'm thinkin' not.  This is definitely a taxpayer treat.




"Joe Carlson, School Board president, I have a question for you. A couple of years ago before I agreed to work on the referendum we spoke about the fitness center. You assured me that in no way would the district financially support it. You told me there was the grant for equipment and that the St. Joe’s Foundation was contributing $250,000 and that the athletic department was soliciting donations to make up the balance of what was needed to build this center. 

    What happened? How could a district that had to raise the tax levy to the maximum allowed in order to reduce programming cuts, a district that is anticipating another $2 million reduction in state aid next year, a district that discusses an operational referendum in order to operate, a district that is considering combining the twin high schools in order to save money, how could that district give $100,000 to the fitness center?"

Angry citizens have a right to speak

    “A Plea For More Civil Dialogue.”

    That was the ominous headline last week in the Washington County Daily News but it really could have been in any southeast Wisconsin newspaper. Two-bit local political hacks whining away that the public – THE PUBLIC! – wasn’t being nice enough to them. “Woe is us,” they wailed. “The lack of civility is unhealthy,” moaned City Administrator Joe Melvin. The chief whiner, Joe Carlson, the president of West Bend’s apparently too-picked-on school board, complained that too many citizens were too angry. It all gives West Bend a bad name etc. Such baby talk isn’t limited to West Bend. You hear it in New Berlin from the mayor, Jack Chiovatero. Wauwatosa’s mayor, Jill Didier, even bored a recent lunch companion with her complaint that I was trying to ruin her life. In Menomonee Falls, the cabal led by former Village President Joe Greco is perpetually angry that mere taxpayers have the audacity to speak out.

    I have some advice for Carlson and his ilk. Resign. This is America, not Joe Stalin’s Russia or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Iran. Speaking out, often loudly, isn’t an indecent abuse of decorum but the prerogative of an active citizenry. The louder the better, by the way. What the crybabies are upset about is they prefer to govern conservative communities in a moderate-to-liberal squishy way. When the public revolts, the leaders cry foul. A telling quote from West Bend Mayor Kristine Deiss: “The hardest thing has been fighting communication ... perception over reality.”

    In West Bend, it was Mayor Deiss who tried to reappoint Library Board members who infuriated the public by insisting on keeping gay smut in the children’s department. It’s the same community where aldermen are determined to stick a low-income housing slum the residents don’t want. This isn’t a problem of perception. The reality is the community’s leaders are doing things the public doesn’t like. In New Berlin, outraged citizens want Chiovatero’s scalp for trying to put a slum in the heart of the community. In Menomonee Falls, taxpayers went ballistic when library employees tried to censor kids’ art work at the parochial school art fair. Back in West Bend, Carlson’s school board keeps proposing school tax referendums the public doesn’t want.

    In each case, the citizenry is speaking out. Good. Carlson a few months ago berated a fellow school board member for daring to air differences in public. Horrors! Hey, Carlson, differences of opinion in government are supposed to be in the open. West Bend belongs to the residents of West Bend not Carlson and not Deiss. They are the employees but think of themselves as the bosses (or dictators). The taxpayer/owners have a right to see public business dealt with in the open.

    Yeah, sure, they’ll respond. But can’t we be, you know, more “civil?” While some people always go too far, the problem in most communities is too much civility, not too little. Most folks let the power structure tax and spend, preside over mediocre school systems, lard public payrolls with unneeded workers, dole out unconscionable benefits and act like their the leaders of Liberalville. The few communities where people object are the ones whose residents are care the most.

    America was founded loudly and angrily. Every positive development in this country – civil rights, the end to slavery, tax relief – has been a result of the populace raising hell. It’s what makes America great. The reason suburbanites are yelling now is that they fundamentally oppose the leftist drift of their hometowns. Their vocalism is a very good thing, whether the thin-skinned small town politicos like it or not.

  

New Charter School Proposed in West Bend

A certified letter has been send to West Bend school district administration requesting a public hearing on the matter of a charter school in West Bend.

The plan at this point is to start this fall with K and 1^st grade. Future expansion to 6^th grade or possibly 8^th grade would continue next fall. According to Pastor Dunford of First Baptist Church, many parents have expressed a desire for them to begin a charter school.
The West Bend Board of Education needs to approve such a measure. Charter schools typically educate for less money, have smaller class sizes and results that compare favorably to or better than traditional public schools. There is strong potential for cost savings to the community by educating through charter schools.
This is a very exciting idea for West Bend!

Day of Silence disrupts classroom time in West Bend

Special interest groups.  Groups that teach minors how to take their agenda into the public school, steal valuable educational time and take control of teachers are reprehensible.  Taxpayers should really be speaking up about activities such as these.  This past Wednesday, FRIDAY, April 17, deemed the "Day of Silence" by national organization GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight, yadda, yadda, yadda) saw the intrusion of attention-seeking youngsters stealing classroom instructional time from classmates and coveting the period to promote their agenda and causing a distraction to the learning environment.  Activities for the participants included placing duct tape over one's mouth, having others speak on your behalf, and having teachers authorize non-participation in the classroom that day.

No special interest group should have the ability to seize, jeopardize and compromise educational time to the tune of even 1 cent of taxpayer money.

While students have every right to express themselves, this is not an appropriate way to do so.  (Whatever happened to t-shirts?)  School administration needs to get a grip on any special interest groups that intend to rob kids of education and taxpayers of their money.

The CODE OF CONDUCT for the West Bend School District states that children must be removed from the classroom if they exhibit:

(d) Behavior which interferes with the ability of the teacher to teach effectively.
or
(e) Behavior which is inconsistent with effective teaching and learning in the classroom

Why has our school district allowed this group to sabotage our tax dollars, which are already under scrutiny?  Our school board tells us we are short of money.  We are taxed to the max and hear cries for more.  Yet we allow special interest groups to enter the classroom where students are held captive and undermine teacher authority.  Very disturbing.

West Bend School District Needs Rocket Scientist

The WB School Board is struggling to make budget cuts.  Maybe we could start with administration.  If the School Board was REALLY listening to ALL the taxpayers, they would have had this right by now.  C'mon, people, now, smile on your brother, everybody get together...  tell WEAC where to get off.


WB News today:

Board President Joe Carlson said that in the private sector a business owner would raise revenue to deal with increased costs - but the school district does not have that option. 

    “My business would not run if we had to cut our way to prosperity,” he said. 

    The only option for the school district to raise money, he said, is through an operational referendum. 

    “It’s not that easy to forward an operating referendum,” said board member Todd Miller. “Not in West Bend.” 

    Board member Lynn Corazzi said last fall the board was accused of not listening to taxpayers, but the people speaking at the meeting in favor of an operating referendum are taxpayers, too. 

Corazzi's statement is indicative of his campaigning strategy.  SAY you are listening to everyone, when really, you're not.  


What is board president Joe Carlson saying here?  Anyone else tired of hearing about comparison to his private sector business experience?  Gag.  Get with the program.

West Bend School District talks cutting positions - forgets WEAC

Notice how WEAC is never mentioned by Herdrich.  Let's put the push for INCREASES by WEAC on the inclusion list for "uknown factors."  Seems WEAC is all FOR tax levy increases in West Bend, just as long as it doesn't affect teacher salaries....


Lest we forget:  Shelly Krueger, co-president of the Teacher’s Union, took the microphone together with Kim Will to announce that the Union and the teachers are willing to work on a compromise to help the School District in these financially challenging times. Words like ‘shared sacrifice’ went along side with ‘contract negotiations’.  

   Recommendations for the the 2010-11 preliminary budget the West Bend School Board received Monday included job cuts that would equal 26.1 teaching positions. 

    Balancing the budget will require the board to make $2 million in reductions. 

    The proposed cuts would mean the elimination of a librarian and a gifted and talented teacher at the elementary level; one dean of students at the middle school level; and a minimum of eight teaching positions and two cheerleading coaching positions at the high school.

 Also proposed are reductions in maintenance positions amounting to $125,000 and in system operations, $299,000.

    Currently unknown factors - such as the staff contract settlement, state aid calculations, potential changes to the levy assumption, and student enrollment will have an impact on what a final budget may look like.

West Bend School District scrambling to rescue $12,000+ grant money going down the toilet

Challenge Day.    It's baaaaaaack........

This time, though, the disctrict administration is trying to work through issues to save the $12,000+ AODA grant money they decided to use for this inappropriate and wasteful program.  This grant was ok'd by the school board, but the program never was.  When parents caught wind, they decided to get vocal, calling the district administration with their opposing viewpoints concerning the way this program operated and could potentially affect and harm district children (with deep roots in religion, by the way).  In reaction, the school district allegedly shut down Challenge Day in a closed session without it ever appearing on the agenda.  Ouch.  A real no-no.

Now it seems that Ted Neitzke, Supt. of Curriculum and Instruction, is trying to salvage the UNREFUNDABLE $12,000.  Kathy "I don't have to respond to your open records requests" Zarling is scrambling to whip up a program of some kind that will dump Challenge Day on our teachers in what is being deemed a "modified" version. 

In this case, the school district has abused, and lost, some solid financial grant money that could have been put to good use on an AODA program (it's original intent).  Instead, the originally planned psychfest has been vomited into the laps of our schoolteachers.

Just wondering...will they get paid for taking part in this 6-hour session?

And who exactly brought this program to the district?  It's rumored that retired Supv. of Curric., Mary Jane Burdge, had something to do with it....

Challenge Day.  Indeed.

West Bend School District Locks in Students, Locks out Taxpayers for Challenge Day

New on the West Bend School District website is an announcement that hasn't been seen or heard of on any other venue that I know.  I have spent time calling around and asking parents of high schoolers, but nobody has heard of the recently announced "Challenge Day" our school district is offering from February 16 through February 19.

Mind you, it all sounds wonderful.  Teaching kids how to be nicey-nice to each other.  The CHALLENGE DAY HANDBOOK, which I read in its entirety, mentions tears, counseling and "finally identifying" certain students who need to break down and release, but is this the job of our local public schools to purport psychosocial disorders and psychiatric problems?  

The Challenge Day vision statement is:

"Challenge Day successfully addresses some common issues seen at most schools during our school programs including cliques, gossip, rumors, negative judgments, teasing, harassment, isolation, stereotypes, intolerance, racism, sexism, bullying, violence, homophobia, hopelessness, apathy, and hidden pressures to create an image, achieve or live up to the expectations of others."

I would think that HOMOPHOBIA is a pretty SUBJECTIVE TERM for a program like this.  Is our school district supporting the reinforcement that kids with a core belief system that opposes homosexuality go against it? 

But wait, that's not all.  According to the page that lists the costs to employ the service of this California-based program, taxpayers in the West Bend School District will be sucking this cry-fest to the tune of $16,000 to $18,000.  Here is their breakdown:

EVENT COST:  $3200 per day x 4 days:  $13,200

HOTEL ROOM:  $300 per day x 3 days (maybe 4):   $900

TRANSPORTATION:  $100 to $150 per day x 4 days:  $500

AIR FARE:  $600 - $2500

MISC SUPPLIES:  $100 - $150

Total potential cost:  $16,000 - $18,000

It gets worse.

Under the "PRIVACY GUIDELINES" for the day:

Anyone NOT fully participating the entire day should not have access to the room. (Members of the media are required to be there the full day as participants or can show up at the end of the day only.)

AND

· You are able to control access to the room. Put up “Do Not Disturb” signs or lock the doors from
the inside to control access.

AND

The room requirement is at least 50’ x 50’ (for 100 youth participants plus 25-35 adults).

AND

· Windows below eye level in the room must be covered to avoid any distractions such as people
walking by, looking in windows, etc.

FINALLY...

The handbook states that this group expects a 1:4 ratio of adults to students, and these adults are acting in a capacity as a "counselor/facilitator."  What is our public school doing here?  This is a waste of taxpayer money.  What can we expect of these counselors who "counsel"???  They get no training.  They HAVE no training.  They get 30 mins or so before the event.  That's it.  With an enormous adult to student ratio such as this, one would have expected to see the open invite in a more public place such as, oh, the West Bend Daily News, or perhaps broadcast on our local radio station, WBKV.  

This event handbook further requires that no more than 100 students attend the event session.  With four days of sessions, that's 400 students, meaning 100 adult volunteers are required.

Who are these people?  Who invited them?  

Lots of questions here.

Inquiring minds want to know.

West Bend School District Finance Admin. bites the dust?

Hidden INSIDE the blankets of the West Bend Daily News (keep it quiet, please).  I just had to include the title given to this story by the WB News.  Quits?  Really!  Gives a harsh tone to this story.  But that's just my opinion.  At any rate, I find this intriguing.  Wonder what REALLY went on behind those closed doors?  Do stay tuned.



West Bend School District’s administrator of finance quits



    The West Bend School District will soon begin the search for a new administrator of finance.

    Brian Dasher, who held the position for the past two years, submitted his letter of resignation to the district about a week ago and the school board approved his request after meeting in closed session Monday.

    Dasher had been on medical leave since Oct. 5.
